Health inspection delays create challenges for NYC restaurants that need "A" letter grades to survive. Learn how to stay ahead.New York City’s restaurant industry is facing mounting challenges due to prolonged delays in health department inspections. Budget cuts and staffing shortages within the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOH) have resulted in many establishments waiting over a year to be reinspected.  With fewer inspectors and a $700 million budget cut from 2023, the backlog continues to grow. In the past year alone, inspection rates have dropped significantly, “leaving many restaurants in limbo, waiting for the agency to send an inspector after they’ve fixed the issues” – Eater With uncertainty surrounding reinspection timelines, it is more important than ever for restaurants to do well on their initial inspection.

Waiting for Reinspection

For restaurants that do not receive 13 points or less on their initial inspection, these delays can be incredibly frustrating and costly. Waiting months for a reinspection to improve their grade can deter guests and hurt their reputation. While the Letter Grade System was designed to provide transparency, many frustrated operators are either displaying outdated, misleading grades, or not displaying them at all. As a result, guests are not being provided with transparency the System promised, while operators are subjecting themselves to additional fines for not adhering to posting requirements.

Given the delays in the reinspection process, restaurants cannot afford to take a reactive approach. Instead of waiting and hoping for a quick reinspection, owners can and should take proactive steps to ensure they maintain inspection readiness every day.

How to Maintain Inspection Readiness and Stay Prepared

The best way to avoid the long wait times and potential revenue loss is to do well on the first inspection. Easier said than done? Not really.  Based on our experience, operators that are proactive do well.

In a time when DOH inspections are slower than ever, being proactive is the key  to protecting your restaurant’s reputation, keeping guests safe, and ensuring continued success in NYC’s competitive dining scene. Staying proactive means keeping daily protocols, making sure there are no potential critical violations, holding staff meetings, training staff, staying vigilant and conducting mock inspections//3rd party audits.

What are the Benefits Mock Inspections?

Mock inspections are unannounced audits that provide an unbiased, thorough review of a food establishments compliance with health codes. Conducting regular mock inspections will:

  • Ensure compliance with the Code.
  • Help identify and correct potential violations ahead of time to prevent fines, reduce risk, and ensure that you are operating at the highest levels of food safety and sanitation.
  • Allow staff to become more familiar with health code requirements, leading to better day-to-day food safety practices.
  • Increase confidence during official inspections – Knowing that your restaurant has already been vetted by a professional makes the real inspection much less stressful, especially when it’s been a while.
  • give operators a practice run eliminating the element of surprise.

Don’t let NYC’s Health Inspection Delays Impact you. Be proactive. Stay ahead.

Despite the backlog and the budget deficit, a DOH inspector will eventually show up. Hiding grades isn’t the answer, maintaining inspection readiness is.

Are you ready? Is your staff? We can make sure you are. That’s what we do.
